Mattress Topper Guide
How to choose the right mattress topper — from our showroom in Hamilton, Ontario.
“Should I buy a featherbed or a mattress topper?” is one of the most common questions we get from customers who want to make their mattress feel new again without replacing it. Here are the answers, from experience.
What’s the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress pad?
- Mattress pad: Thin layer that sits on top of the mattress, primarily for protection. Adds minimal comfort.
- Mattress topper: Thicker layer (2–4 inches) that significantly changes the feel of your mattress — softer or firmer depending on the fill.
- Featherbed: A thick, plush topper filled with down or feathers. Adds a cloud-like softness on top of your mattress.
One of the most common things we hear: “I had no idea a topper could make such a big difference.” It’s one of the most cost-effective bedroom upgrades you can make.
Should I buy a featherbed or a mattress topper?
| Featherbed | Foam/Fibre Topper | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, plush, cloud-like | Supportive, consistent |
| Best for | Adding softness and luxury | Changing firmness level |
| Back pain | Not ideal for support needs | Better for targeted support |
| Hot sleepers | Breathable (down fill) | Depends on material |
| Care | Dry clean or professional wash | Usually machine washable |
Will a mattress topper make my bed softer?
Yes — a featherbed or soft fibre topper will add significant softness to a firm mattress. This is one of the most popular uses for a topper, especially for customers who find their mattress too firm but aren’t ready to replace it.
If your mattress is already too soft and you want more support, look for a firm memory foam or latex topper instead.
What thickness of mattress topper should I choose?
- 1–2 inches: Subtle change in feel, good for fine-tuning comfort
- 2–3 inches: Noticeable difference, most popular choice
- 3–4 inches: Significant transformation, best for very firm mattresses or those needing extra cushioning
Keep in mind that a thicker topper may require deep-pocket fitted sheets to stay in place.
Are wool mattress toppers worth it?
Wool toppers are an excellent choice for Canadian climates. They are:
- Naturally temperature-regulating — warm in winter, cool in summer
- Moisture-wicking — great for hot sleepers or night sweats
- Naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites
- Durable and long-lasting
They cost more upfront but are a worthwhile investment, especially for Ontario winters.
Can a mattress topper help with back pain?
It depends on the cause of your back pain and your current mattress:
- If your mattress is too firm, a soft topper can relieve pressure points and reduce pain
- If your mattress is too soft, a firm topper can add the support your spine needs
- If your mattress is worn out or sagging, a topper will not fix the underlying problem — a new mattress is the better solution
When in doubt, come into our showroom and describe your situation — we’ll point you in the right direction.
How do I keep a mattress topper from sliding?
- Use a fitted sheet over the topper to hold it in place
- Look for toppers with non-slip backing or anchor straps at the corners
- A deep-pocket fitted sheet that wraps around both the mattress and topper works best
How do I clean a mattress topper?
- Featherbeds: Dry clean or take to a professional laundry with large-capacity machines
- Fibre/synthetic toppers: Most are machine washable — check the care label and use a large front-load washer
- Memory foam toppers: Spot clean only — do not machine wash or submerge in water
- Wool toppers: Spot clean and air out regularly; professional cleaning recommended annually
Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before washing.
How long does a mattress topper last?
- Featherbeds: 8–10 years with proper care
- Memory foam toppers: 3–5 years
- Wool toppers: 10+ years
- Synthetic fibre toppers: 2–4 years
